What started as a way to train for track quickly turned into a passion for Carroll High senior cross-country runner Eli Canal.

“I started cross-country in middle school to prepare me for the upcoming track season and ended up liking cross country more,” Canal said.

Now, cross country is his passion, though he still enjoys and runs track.

“My freshman year, Coach Leonard helped me realize that if I focused my efforts and took it seriously, I could succeed in cross-country,” Canal said.

His freshman year, Canal was inspired by the seniors on the team. That year the men’s Dragon cross-country team won its first state title for Carroll ISD. The team has won state the past three years.

“The seniors taught me that working hard and having a strong work ethic could get you far,” Canal said.

Canal’s successes haven’t been without a price. The summer before his junior year, he suffered severe dehydration and had to take a few weeks off from running to recuperate.

“Taking time off from cross country was really hard. I wanted to meet goals and prepare for the upcoming season. But I continued to go to practices and support my team. It helped for me to see my teammates meeting their goals,” Canal said.

Even after losing training time during the summer, Canal made third team All-State in 2013, just like he had in 2012.

Canal plans to major in biomedical engineering and wants to run cross country and track after graduating in May.

Stay tuned: Over the next several months, Update Southlake will focus on an outstanding Dragon athlete.
